Yoruba Language Classes: Keeping Our Language Alive in the Next Generation

One fear many Yoruba parents in the UK share is that their children might grow up without knowing the language of their heritage. A child born and raised in Hull, learning in English every day at school, may have little reason to hear or speak Yoruba unless there’s a deliberate effort to teach it. That’s exactly why Yoruba Community Hull started our weekly Yoruba language classes for children.

What the Classes Involve

Our classes are for children aged 6–12, held every Saturday at 10am at our Community Hall on Beverley Road. Classes are free for members, with a small £3 fee for guests per session.

What We Teach

We don’t just teach language — we teach culture alongside it. Children learn:

• Yoruba vocabulary and grammar, tailored to their age group
• Yoruba songs and poetry passed down through generations
• History and tradition  including naming ceremonies, festivals, and the meaning behind Yoruba names
• How to greet and show respect to elders in everyday conversation

Why This Matters

Language isn’t just a means of communication it’s a vault for culture. When a child doesn’t speak Yoruba, much of the tradition, history, and wisdom of their ancestors risks being lost along with it. By teaching our children the language now, we’re making sure the next generation doesn’t lose touch with where they come from, no matter how far they grow up from the homeland.

More Than Just Language

Beyond learning to speak Yoruba, the classes give children a chance to make friends with other Yoruba children living in Hull. Many parents tell us their children have found real friendships here, and now look forward to Saturdays with genuine excitement.
